NIH Faith Forum on Genetics Program
We are in the second year of a two year grant from the National Institutes of Health. This project is an Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) education program for communities of faith in Portland Metro area. We are currently serving twenty communities through a collaboration with the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. Denominations we are currently working with include Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Plymoth Brethren, Greek Orthodox, Church of Latter Day Saints, American Baptist, Disciples of Christ, Seventh Day Adventist, and Southern Baptist. Our kick off session took place on January 27th of this year with Dr. Ted Peters, a nationally known theologian who writes about genetic technologies, as our keynote speaker. Each of the groups will meet five times before our final all group session on May 12th. Approximately 150 participants are discussing five areas of ethical concern raised by genetic science during the community seminar sessions:
- Genetics, Faith and the Commitment to Human Dignity
- Genetic Information & Personal Identity
- Genetic Research on Human and Non-Human Subjects
- Genetic Engineering and Future Generations
- Genetic Science & Social Justice
In addition to discussions of the social impact of genetic technologies participants learn about genetic science itself through a five part curriculum designed by Dr. Lisa Sardinia, science education director for the project. The program will culminate in a nationally advertised conference on genetics and faith next fall.
